Yuck | Live in Hong Kong 26/1/2012

Yuck live in Hong Kong
Daniel Blumberg - Singer and Guitarist;Mariko Doi - Bassist;
Max Bloom - Guitarist; Jonny Rogoff - Drummer
 Shortly after playing on the Weezer Cruise ship (I’m not joking), "Yuck" were on the way to Hong Kong to play a gig at the Hangout in Sai Wan Ho. There was a nice crowd of people gathered outside already, it might even have been a sold out show. How great is that?  Local band “The Yours” was performing as the opening act and already the audience was all the way at the front, close to the stage. The People's Party | Live in HK 10/1/2012

On Tuesday night, "The People's Party" presented four acts in one night at the Kitec in Kowloon Bay, the same place where "Mogwai" played about a month earlier (review here). The evening started early with local act "9maps". Unfortunately, I missed them completely because I could not get to the venue in time. After running massively late, I ended up taking a taxi from Central. Only about 15 minutes later, I arrived at Kitec.

Clockenflap 2011 | 10-11/12/2011

Imagine a real festival. With international acts and local bands alike. A venue right at the waterfront. People sitting on the grass, enjoying the music. It is probably not something you would expect to happen here in Hong Kong. But it did. Clockenflap was bigger, better and greater this year. And free on top of that.

That way, a very mixed crowd, locals and expats, lots of young teenagers and families with their kids among them, savoured two days in the sun and even in the chilly winds at night.

Christian Tetzlaff | David Zinman & Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich | Beethoven Violin Concerto

Christian Tetzlaff David Zinman Tonhalle Orchester Beethoven
A spontaneous post this time around…

Yesterday, I missed out on Frank Peter Zimmermann playing with the Hong Kong Philharmonic which is a SHAME! And that is although my mole in the orchestra had given me a heads-up saying that there would be a "good soloist" this weekend - and he does not usually do that lightly. However, since he could not remember the name, I shrugged it off and opted to go and see the farewell concert of Hong Kong indie veterans False Alarm instead. It was also one of the  last gigs at the old Hidden Agenda before its relocation. Honestly, I would not have wanted to miss out on that either. So maybe it was good after all that I did not realize the predicament waiting in the wings.

Deerhoof | Live in Hong Kong 7/12/2011

First of all, my apologies for the delay. Computer issues got in the way of a more timely posting. That, and then Clockenflap on the weekend (see the review here) and then some other things. Oh well.

On December 7, Deerhoof played in Hong Kong for the first time ever. The concert was part of the Asian tour to promote their latest album "Deerhoof vs. Evil", their tenth so far, released in January 2011 on Polyvinyl Records. The gig was held at the "Hang Out" in Sai Wan Ho which is a somewhat peculiar venue. During the day, it serves as a youth club in a centre for young people in crisis. The basketball hoops were a nice reminder of that. I have to say that I found it rather fitting for the occasion.

Electric Eel Shock | Transworld Ultra Rock

Electric Eel Shock's 2007 album "Transworld Ultra Rock" is a guitar-fest. With its high energy mix of selected rock and roll styles it covers the gamut from straight-on heavy metal to the funkier side of the genre. The power trio elegantly distills the best elements of thirty years of rock into an infectious cocktail, which is the musical equivalent of three double espressos. And a cold shower. And speed.
Missing but rather not missed are any sinister grimacing, boasting or - probably worst - "deep" lyrics that would normally go with the territory. Everything here is done in style, with a sense of humour and an effortless musicality. This album is most certainly not the reinvention of the wheel, but then it shouldn't be. It is just great and unpretentious rock and roll, and in spite of the band's eclectic approach, there is nothing contrived about it.
